Avalon Dragon Boating had its launch event in the fall of 2006, and within a few months, nearly 60 women living with breast cancer had joined up. Soon after, the team began to design and build an exquisite wooden dragon boat with the help of naval architect, Bruce Whitelaw from the Marine Institute, Memorial University of Newfoundland. In May of 2008, they created a fiberglass mould of their boat in order to begin their dream of building a fleet of racing boats and hosting their own dragon boat festival. Close to a thousand friends and supporters joined them in September to celebrate the launch of their lovingly built dragon boat.
Dragon Boating is a powerful experience that helps promote recovery and healing following breast cancer as it encourages women to regain their strength and become more physically fit. The Avalon Dragons have joined local fitness facilities to become ready for paddling and meet regularly for paddling training and fitness activities.
The Avon Hello Tomorrow Fund award will help the Avalon Dragon Boating members do even more to bring dragon boating to Newfoundland and Labrador, encourage other breast cancer survivors to get involved, and promote health, wellness and enthusiasm for women living with breast cancer. Congratulations Jane and the Avalon Dragon Boating members!
