CASH AWARDS HELP EMPOWER WOMEN AND CHANGE THE WORLD
Three Canadian Initiatives Honoured with
$5,000 Avon Hello Tomorrow Fund Awards
Montreal, Quebec, November 10, 2008 – As winners of the Avon Hello Tomorrow Fund, three Canadian breast cancer initiatives are one step closer to fulfilling their dreams of creating a better tomorrow for their communities. The Hello Tomorrow Fund, a $5,000 cash award program from Avon Canada, Inc. was created to support individuals to realize a program, project or idea that empowers women and makes a significant difference in the lives of those touched by breast cancer. The winners were selected from applications submitted from across the country.
Lynn Newbery and Lorna Hamill from New Hazelton, British Columbia won for their project “Hands and Hearts in the Fight Against Breast Cancer” which will allow them to host Breast Cancer awareness luncheon meetings in rural north British Columbia. They hope to encourage more women to seek help sooner thereby increasing the possibilities of success in breast cancer outcomes.
Jane Brown from St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador won for her “Avalon Dragon Boating” project that will allow Avalon Dragon Boating members to do even more to bring dragon boating to Newfoundland and Labrador, encourage other breast cancer survivors to get involved, and promote health, wellness and enthusiasm for women living with breast cancer.
Teresa Dellar from Kirkland, Quebec won for the West Island Palliative Care Centre Bereavement Services offered to the terminally ill and their families. The award will go towards funding the services offered to help reassure terminally ill patients that their families and significant others will be cared for through support groups, the bereavement caller program and individual referrals for counseling. Services are offered to families for at least one year following their loved one’s death.
The three winners were chosen from a pool of contenders by an expert panel of judges, including Ms. Nicola Lewis - Executive Director, Canadian Breast Cancer Research Alliance (CBCRA); Ms. Patricia Robinson – Partner, Goodmans LLP and Secretary, Avon Flame Foundation; Mr. Chris Stevens - President, Avon Canada; and Ms. Roberta Lacey - Director of Communications, Avon Canada.
Ms. Lewis said that she was touched by the caring and creativity expressed in the applications, “It is so inspiring to see the many creative ways people have of helping each other. I am sure that these initiatives will touch many lives and make a real difference.”
“The Hello Tomorrow Fund is part of Avon’s ongoing commitment to empowering women,” said Chris Stevens, President of Avon Canada Inc. “The incredible projects we’ve chosen as winners are certain to have a powerful impact on entire communities.
